Answer to Game in Poem "The Old Songs"

Answer to Game in Poem "The Old Songs"

The Old Songs
(by Luke Walter A. Ceballos)

Line:

Hiding inside myself,

to wait and see a different view in my life --

someone waiting home for me,

maybe she'll lay her head on my shoulder.

I know you'll understand,

the moment you touch me --

maybe it's you,

maybe the old songs.

I've been so alone all my life,

I guess I wanted something new in my life.

I've been saving love songs and lullabies,

I'm tired of listening alone.

somewhere i have never travelled (by e.e. cummings)

somewhere i have never travelled
(by e.e. cummings)

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully, mysteriously) her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

I wrote this back in college. There is a pattern I used in writing this. Can you identify the pattern? What is it? Please give your answer in the comments section. Thanks.

Saturday Night is Also Lonely
(by Lamberto G.Ceballos; published in Home Life July 1999)

The office chores have already been put away
Inside cold steel cabinets.
On the street I am now a stranger
To nondescript faces from nowhere
Only to be gone in the midst
Of interweaving scenes of light
And shadows.
How lonely the hours of one who wlaks alone,
Who feels the pain of a friend's absence.

Here in this KTV bar they don't care
And don't really know if a song is sung
In pain as a love of long ago did
Under a golden moon after losing his bride.

You're not here, my friend,
And I cannot flee from the drowning
Loneliness even when beer mugs clink
In the dimly lit room that engulfs me.
On the sill of my silence
My heart becomes a wounded bluebird
Poised to fly home.

Sitting all alone at my table, eating my ginatan and juice... I came across your eye catching title "... Is Also Lonely."  I was thinking of going out on Saturday, by myself (as always) - on a bar - enjoying the music and at least two shots of Bailey's, then off to my bed at 10:00pm. Yeah, you were right... INDEED, "SATURDAY NIGHT IS ALSO LONELY."

Ang Imong Kanindot

(ni Luke Walter A. Ceballos, napatik sa Superbalita Pebrero 16, 2008)

Unsay naa sa imong hawak
nga sa paglatagaw sa akong huna-huna,
adto man gyud ko mosangit?
Unsay naa sa imong dughan og buko-buko
nga adto man gyud mogakos ang akong ispiritu?

Wala bay nakapahimangno nimo

kung dili man gani tika maangkon?
Dawaton ko na lang ba ang panahom
nga ang kanindot para lang tan-awon?

Nganong ang mga mata di man makontento sa pagtan-aw lang?
Ug gusto man gyud sa kamot nga hikapon ug kuptan
ang kanindot nga dili makab-ot sa mata?

Not a Pager
(by Luke Walter A. Ceballos)
(published in the Philippines Free Press September 12, 1998)

You tear me down to pieces,
each time I think of you.
Turn my head inside out,
the minute you are in it.

You dumbfound me
with songs you learned from MTV.
You keep me thinking,
when you excuse yourself for Jollibee.

You manipulate my heart,
when you press the buttons of your Tamagotchi.
You bag my thoughts
Like a cellphone in your pocket.

But I'm not like a pager
that goes well with your Armani Jeans,
so I won't ask you to be my baby
not like that song from Savage Garden.

Leadership and Mentorship in Life

The definition of leadership is simple. Its concept is comprehensible. It is common. But there are deeper meanings in being a leader. It is not only about having people to follow you or be under your authority. It is not only about being in a position to do so. It is really more about being in a situation to do so.

I had a proverbial and literal "pantry talk" with an officemate. He asked me if it would be okay with me if I can be his mentor. He explained that he has observed that I want to be a leader and he wanted me to be a mentor to him in the aspect of life and leadership. He said that people need mentors because "No hermit has become rich." He wants to succeed in his economic aspirations and would like to learn life lessons and principles to help him do so.

He related that a certain group of people invited him to a leadership seminar but it was really a bait for their networking business. Then our conversation, which we never intended to be long, was cut short by a phone call he had to take. He asked to be excused and I told him we can just exchange e-mails.

This conversation with my officemate gave me an inspiration to write down my thoughts about leadership, mentorship and life. So here they are.

Leadership is Situational

In my own experiences, many times was that being a leader is called upon by the situation. I was and is not really someone who goes out of the way to organise something or actively pursue leadership positions. I am both proud and humble to say that there were times when I assumed leadership positions or roles because circumstances called for. There were times when I needed to be the leader so that something can be done so that problems will be solved. Come to think of it, leaders are called not for the sake of having someone to call a leader but because one is needed given the situation.

Everybody has the potential to be a leader. You do not need to be the oldest, or most experienced, or most knowledgeable, or most educated or the most diligent worker. You just need to have sufficient levels of these qualities and, more importantly, the virtue to be capable of facilitating people and resources from goal setting to carrying out action plans and reaching the said aims.

Mentorship can Take the Form of Friendship

You do not need to be a leader to be a mentor. Our friends can be our mentors. We just have to select which of them and which of their qualities would we like to learn and develop. I have learned to listen to everybody, especially my friends. By listening, I mean learning lessons, imbibing the values involved and applying them.

Life is a Journey which Involves Learning and Application

It has been a guiding principle for people that life is not the end point. It is not the destination. This adage has helped address life problems which include the stagnation, deterioration and loss of meaning in life. This means that for us to live a full and meaningful life, we have to see life as a journey.

But sometimes some people misconstrue this analogy as merely going through the process of travelling through the course of life. Some people think that this is their passport to leaving any situation and hopping from one phase in life to another. Some forget that what is more important is facing the present problems, solving them and learning from them. Then, when the right time to really move on will come, we should make sure that we bring the lessons with us and use them. At the same time, the life lessons we have learned we should apply now.
